I want the Government to add 2 new bank holidays to the UK calendar, one in the spring, between January and May, and the second in the Autumn between September and December. We have fewer public holidays than most other European countries and ours are all concentrated in the summer months. We need an early spring break and an autumn break!

AT LEAST ONE UK-WIDE PUBLIC HOLIDAY PER MONTH
In order to bring us in line with the rest of the European Union (which despite suggestions of a referendum we’re still to remain part of) the UK should have one Bank Holiday per month. At present we have 8 Public Holidays per year, the lowest amount for any EU member country, we propose that this 8 should be raised to 13 days a year, this brings us in line with Germany, Greece has 15 public holidays a year, Spain allows a maximum of 14 public holidays per year and would put us above France who have 10 days. There is no suggestion that any of the holidays we currently have should be moved just the months without a public holiday be given one.

ARMED FORCES DAY - MAKE IT A PUBLIC HOLIDAY
We request that Armed Forces Day is made an official public holiday. A holiday to commemorate the freedoms given to us by the millions of British and Commonwealth soldiers who have died on battlefields across the world, and continue to put their lives on the line when called upon. Australia and New Zealand’s ANZAC day is a public holiday, our soldiers deserve that same respect of at least one free day of celebration and remembrance

REMEMBRANCE MONDAY BANK HOLIDAY
This petition proposes that there be a new public bank holiday on the Monday following Remembrance Sunday in November each year. Remembrance Sunday is a day of commemoration of the sacrifice made by our armed forces and others in the defence of our country and our democracy. Remembrance Monday should be a day of celebration for our nation, rejoicing in the freedom and democracy that has endured as a result of such sacrifice. There is currently no public bank holiday from the end of August until Christmas Day and this holiday would fall between those dates.

MAKE THE DAY OF GENERAL ELECTIONS A BANK HOLIDAY
With turnout at General Elections in recent years the lowest it has been since the First World War, we petition the Government to do more to make a General Election an occasion where people feel their vote will matter. Making the day of a General Election a Bank Holiday will give the public more flexibility and little excuse not to vote. A General Election only takes place every 4-5 years and it is important that the government makes every allowance for people to vote.

RECOGNISE YORKSHIRE DAY AS A BANK HOLIDAY
On August 1st 2011, ‘Yorkshire Day’ was the most typed thing in the whole of Britain, on the social networking site Twitter. This shows how the people of Yorkshire recognise it as their cultural day, just as the Scots & Welsh recognise St Andrew’s & St David’s day, respectively. As such, we call on the government to recognise Yorkshire Day (August 1st) as the official day of Yorkshire & make it a bank holiday, within the accepted & historic boundaries of the county.

Hallowe’en is becoming more and more popular in the UK. Most public attractions across the country celebrate Hallowe’en in some way, either by ‘fancy dress’ decorations, or attractions including live shows some of which draw huge crowds.
